LateRooms.com - Jorvik Viking Festival Returns to York
The 27th Jorvik Viking Festival will take place in York from February 11th to February 19th.
YORK, ENGLAND, January 07, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The annual Jorvik Viking Festival will be back in York on Saturday February 11th, with special events due to take place across the historic city.
Running until Sunday February 19th, the festival is set to feature more than 80 activities that celebrate Viking heritage and give visitors an insight into the way the Norse warriors lived.
Venues for the event include the Joseph Rowntree Theatre, the Tang Hall Library, the National Centre for Early Music and York Minster.
The festival is organised by the Jorvik Viking Centre, a popular visitor attraction that was built by the York Archaeological Trust after the remains of a Viking-era city were discovered on the site.
Between 1976 and 1981, archaeologists found timber buildings and evidence of the workshops, fences and animal pens that once made up the settlement of Jorvik.
Now in its 27th year, the Viking Festival helps people to experience what it was like to live in the town by authentically recreating aspects of Viking culture.
Anticipated highlights of this year's edition include a Viking wedding at York Minster on Wednesday February 15th and a Viking banquet at the National Centre for Early Music two days later.
Tickets for the events are individually priced, with discounts available for people who book more than one activity.
LateRooms.com recommends a wide range of places to stay in York that could appeal to history lovers, including Marmadukes Boutique Hotel.
